The two men who are responsible for stealing $90,000 and the identity of over 200 Northern California residents are finally behind bars. Thanks to the hard work of the California Attorney General's Office David Karapetyan, 27, and Shirayr Zamanyan, 31, have both pleaded guilty to multiple charges of felony counts of conspiracy and identity theft.
The pair had installed devices inside several gas pump payment machines that were able to extract the information they needed to walk away with tens of thousands of dollars in cash. They, along with possibly two other men, installed these devices from November 2009 to February 2010 after acquiring the keys necessary to unlock gas station pumps. These devices recorded the credit card and ATM data of thousands of people.
When a 7-11 employee discovered one of these devices the police were called in to investigate. They installed a dummy device and then set up surveillance to discover who was behind the identity theft scandal.
