While it came as no surprise that their suspect had a known history of arson, prosecutors were still amazed at the breadth of damage committed by one individual over the past few weeks in North Hollywood, California.
After locating their suspect, a 34-year-old former Marine, prosecutors charged him with a total of 20 counts of felony arson and one count of felony aggravated arson. Officers finally got a break in the case when an undercover officer witnessed the suspect as he set fire to a mobile home. Based on this and other information, he is believed to have set 19 other fires; a dozen of these fires were set within just three days time.
The same man is responsible for setting multiple fires in Okinawa, Japan. While he claimed at that time that he was drunk and trying to escape from reality, the prosecution hopes to keep him behind bars for good. If he is convicted of all the charges filed against him, he could face a life sentence in a state prison.
