A sheriff's deputy pleaded not guilty to the charges of white collar crimes that were filed against him.
According to Deputy District Attorney Amy Pellman Pentz, 56-year-old Joseph Dyer pleaded no contest to one count of public officer crime. He has been accused of embezzling nearly $450,000 in towing fees that were supposed to go to the city of La Puente. He could face as much as three years in prison when he is sentenced by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephen Marcus.
In addition, his wife, Lydia, pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor charge of filing a false tax return. She was given one year probation in return for the plea. The sheriff's department has been repaid a portion of money by the couple, $554,588, which accounts for the total loss in fines plus $100,000 for the investigation costs.
In addition, they had to pay $44,000 in back taxes to the Franchise Tax Board.
