In Los Angeles, prosecutors have charged Jay Mariotti with seven misdemeanors in connection with an altercation he had with his girlfriend last month. Mariotti is a sports columnist and ESPN commentator who was originally arrested on suspicion of felony domestic assault.
Mariotti's charges include: two counts of domestic violence with injury, one count of vandalism, one count of false imprisonment, two counts of domestic violence and one count of grand theft.
News sources say that Mariotti avoided serious felony charges due to lack of evidence. However, each of his misdemeanor offenses could result in one year of jail time if he is convicted. At this time, his lawyers insist that he is innocent and that his girlfriend was "extremely intoxicated" when the alleged assault took place. His arraignment has been scheduled for Friday.
