In an effort to reduce the number of DUI related collisions that result in persons injured or killed, the Bakersfield Police Department Traffic Enforcement Detail conducted a DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint on Union Ave. The following are the resulting statistics from that checkpoint:
Law enforcement officials checked a total of 1,323 vehicles of the 1,747 that passed through. Of those checked, 54 vehicles were impounded, 34 motorists were issued citations for unlicensed driver, 14 motorists were issued citations for driving on a suspended/revoked drivers license and 4 motorists were issued citations for miscellaneous vehicle code violations.
Additionally, 9 motorists were asked to perform field sobriety tests and of those 9, 5 were arrested and charged with DUI. Two of the 5 arrested also had at least one prior DUI arrest within the past 10 years. Two arrests were also made after finding the drivers were operating their vehicle under the combined influence of alcohol and marijuana.
A grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the national highway Traffic Safety Administration provided the appropriate funding for this program.
