Children witnessed the attack and robbing of their local school crossing guard this week in Los Angeles. Shirley Mayberry, 59, told a black Ford Expedition to stop at her crosswalk at Hooper Avenue, waving her stop sign at the driver. However, 27-year-old Jose Hernandez shouted back that he had no intention of stopping while his female passenger, Vanessa Del Pilar Martinez, 20, got out of the car and approached Mayberry.
Over a dozen students witnessed Martinez attack Mayberry, during which the crossing guard was thrown to the ground, causing her to hit her head on the sidewalk. Soon after Hernandez got out of the Expedition and took the crossing sign from Mayberry while Martinez forcibly removed her whistle and work identification from around her neck.
Both Martinez and Hernandez are being held on bail for $50,000 each; Mayberry's stop sign was found inside their residence.
