An 88-year-old wheelchair-bound man in Westminster, CA faces jail time for murdering his wife. However, Roy Charles Laird and his family are claiming that it was a mercy killing in her nursing home. Adding insult to injury, his alleged use of a firearm could have given him a sentence of 50 years to life in prison.
The judge overseeing his case, Steven D. Bromberg, has agreed to let Laird stay in a round-the-clock care facility that is under lock-down since the old man is not a flight risk and has no previous criminal record. He spoke with Laird saying, who is already suffering from a cold,, "my biggest concern is I don't want you to do anything to hurt yourself."
Laird will remain in jail on a $1 million bond until the judge has approved of a facility as proposed by his family. Laird, or "Chuck" as his friends call him, shot and killed his wife Clara, 86, on a visit to her at her southern California nursing home. He then handed the revolver to authorities as soon as they arrived.
