In Los Angeles, a councilman said that the charges that accuse him of living outside of his San Fernando Valley district are inaccurate. At this time, Richard Alarcon is facing 18 counts of perjury, voter fraud and filing a false declaration of candidacy. His wife, Flora Montes De Oca Alarcon, is facing 6 charges of perjury as well as voter fraud.
When asked, the former state senator and assemblyman said that both he and his wife "are innocent." Both have pled not guilty to their charges and were released. After a 15 month long investigation, their indictment was unsealed.
The Los Angeles Times reported earlier in 2010 that neighbors had not seen Alarcon in his Panorama City home for a few years. Alarcon alleged that he lived at that address until October, but then he and his family moved after his house was broken into by a homeless man.
