This Monday, a man who stole over $80,000 by using a high-powered thermal lance to open an ATM in El Monte was sentenced with 190 months of jail time. He was also ordered to pay $124,000 in restitution for his theft crime offense.
In May, a federal jury found that 47 year old Clinton Elwyn Thompson III was guilty of conspiracy to use file during the commission of a felony, use of fire during the commission of a felony and bank larceny.
According to police, several men were involved in robbing the Los Angeles Federal Credit Union of $79,480 on January 28, 2008. They had used a blow torch to cut the ATM in half and had left burnt $20 bills scattered on the ground, said prosecutors.
Thompson and the other defendants were linked to the robbery after an officer recalled several men stopping and sitting in a car in a deserted Denny's parking lot, which was close to the credit union, on the night of the crime.
